What Will the US Do If Baghdad Attacks the Kurdistan Region? - A Realistic Assessment

As a political observer, we must start with one fundamental truth: US policy in Iraq is driven by interests, not emotions. Washington values the Kurdistan Region as a stable ally against terrorism and regional influence, yet it also seeks to maintain Iraq's overall integrity to prevent Baghdad from falling entirely into Iran's orbit. As of September 30, 2026, the United States has formally concluded its 23-year military mission and closed its main headquarters, while simultaneously opening the world's largest consulate compound in Erbil worth $800 million. The signal is clear: the direct military era has ended, but diplomatic and intelligence commitments remain. 1. If Baghdad launches a military attack on the Region This represents a critical red line. The US established the no-fly zone in 1991 and conducted airstrikes against ISIS in 2014 to protect Erbil. However, Washington remained passive during the 2017 Kirkuk events following the uncoordinated independence referendum. The Reality: The US will not redeploy ground combat troops due to its completed withdrawal. Instead, it would issue severe diplomatic condemnations, freeze military assistance and hardware support to Baghdad, leverage financial pressure through the Central Bank of Iraq, and supply Peshmerga forces with defensive weaponry and actionable intelligence. 2. If Baghdad cuts the budget and economic support This dynamic is already partially unfolding, with regional public sector salaries experiencing severe delays. The Reality: Washington views financial disputes primarily as internal sovereign matters. Its primary approach involves diplomatic pressure to enforce constitutional compliance and advocating through the IMF and World Bank. If total economic blockade occurs, the US Congress could authorize direct financial assistance packages to prevent institutional collapse. 3. If Baghdad attempts to unilaterally alter the constitution and dissolve the Region This is the most extreme and risky scenario. The 2005 Iraqi Constitution explicitly establishes a federal framework recognizing the Kurdistan Region. The Reality: Washington would strongly oppose such moves, viewing the dismantling of federalism as a trigger for civil instability and dictatorship. While not taking direct military action over legal wording, the US would treat unilateral dissolution as a systemic coup, cutting off political recognition and economic backing for the central government. The Bottom Line: The United States no longer acts as a permanent military guardian. In the event of aggression from Baghdad, Washington will not abandon the Kurdistan Region entirely, but its strategy will focus on enabling local defense and applying diplomatic leverage rather than fighting on the ground.
